Question

Hi again,

I got a comment on one of my blogposts yesterday that made me think a little. A girl commented that she finds it sad that I post in English and not in German, my mothertongue. I used to post in German in the beginning. Later on, I posted bilingual and at some point became to lazy and continued to post in English only. I consider English to be an universal language and I'm still thinking that it's the language of choice if you want to reach as many people as possible. I get the most hits from Germany and the US, so until now, I thought English was the best. I know that my English is not the best, but I think I can express what I want to say. Of course, I could do it better in German.

Well, maybe that's just my opinion. So that's my question. Do you agree with my arguing? What are your thoughts?

I added a poll in my sidebar on the right and I'd like to ask all of you to vote and/or comment. I limited the selectable answers to the two languages at stake plus two variations, even though some might prefer a third language :D

Thank you very much in advance!

  1. I don't speak German and seeing how you have so many US readers I think It's important to have the English. I think it is considered the Universal Language. If my memory serves me right, Germans are required to learn at least 1 or 2 more languages and every German I've met so far speaks English. (I've met them around Europe, not just in the US). I wish people in the US were required to learn a 2nd language but we aren't. (If I ever have kids they will certainly be bilingual!) I follow 2 French blogs and I love their nails but have no idea what they are saying. (OK I know a little french but not enough to get through the blog!) Stuff gets lost in translation when I use their English Translator. Anyway, at the end of the day it is your blog and you should do what is best for you. :)

  2. It doesn't really matter to me. English is the universal language but Google Translate can do entire webpages so if something is in a forgien language, I can easily translate =)

  3. As a German who blogs in English - just like you - I must say it doesn't matter to me. I'm able to understand both languages fluently. But I also have to agree with you. English is a universal language!

I always saw English texts (blogs, news, books) as a challenge to improve my skills. I'm almost ashamed to tell you I had English as an advanced course in school because my understanding of the language only got better when I was out of school, challenging myself with English texts. Without this attitude I wouldn't be able to blog in English now.

So, whatever you do, I'll be able to deal with it :)

Wishing you all the best with your decision!! You can do it!

  4. I can't read German but as a follower who loves your blog I would just use google translate if you decided to switch. I think you should do whatever you feel best doing. :)

  6. I am a German girl who only learns english at school and I don't speak it well but for me it's good to read your blog because I can learn a bit ;) I read many other english blogs. Even if yours is my favorite :)
And I think its your image (markenzeichen?) so that others know "oh yeah this is the blog of this german girl with her great nailart".
In my opinion you shouldn't switch. You wrote a blog in english for such a long time now and very successful so why switching? It would switch your image too...!

  7. I think the choice has to be yours in the end! I love reading your blog and seeing what you are up to, which would be difficult if it was in Germany, but I can always hit the translate button! :)

  8. This is your blog, so I believe that, ultimately, you must make the decision. I don't think you will lose true readers with either choice. Translating it is always a choice for readers who don't speak the language you choose to blog with :)

  9. I'm from the US so I obviously prefer English. ;-) I think you express yourself wonderfully, much better than if you had been posting in German and my computer had translated it for me! LOL!
The reason I am commenting is to tell you I read several blogs that post in two languages or their mother language or English only... I haven't stopped following any of them because of a language barrier!!!!
I think you should blog in whatever language is easier for you and everyone else should appreciate that and use a translator. (Google has a great translator) ♥
